[Mayan EDMS: 2031] Mayan EDMS's immediate future

From the blog: https://www.mayan-edms.com/post/post-crowdfunding/

Two days after posting the blog about the unsuccessful crowdfunding for the zone OCR support, a group of companies stepped forward with the interest of investing to get this feature done and keep the project active for a while. However, as with any investment (including crowdfunding), there are some obligations.

For companies having a competitive edge is a necessity. Therefore a condition for the funding is that the zone OCR support must be added as a separate app.

Researching the list of changes needed to get this implemented, there is the matter of the database migrations. There is interdependency in the migration history of the OCR and other apps, this means that it is not possible to have two OCR apps installed at the same time. For the Zone OCR app to work, the current OCR app must be removed. Mayan EDMS version 2.7 will be the last version to include the current OCR app.

This was not an easy decision to make. No doubt many will not agree with it, but it was the right decision to keep the project alive.

[Mayan EDMS: 2035] Re: Mayan EDMS's immediate future

David Kornahrens
Roberto,
I have sent you some emails in regards to also helping out with funding for the project.  I have teamed up with a few people here locally and we are interested in doing what we need to do to encourage and help the development of your system.

Thanks,
David

Hi Roberto,

I'm not sure I understand the implications of removing the current OCR app. Does it mean that from 2.7 onwards, Mayan won't have any OCR capabilities at all anymore? What are the implications of the zone OCR app being separate? Will it still be available freely for anyone who wants to add it or will it be paid, closed source leaving the community without any OCR?

If it is the case that the zone OCR app will not be freely available to the public, is it OK when someone creates an app called something like "Mayan Simple OCR" to make the classic OCR engine installable?

It is perfectly acceptable, you have that freedom under the license. In Django this has been several times (https://github.com/django/django-formtools). Check the other projects under the Mayan organization for examples on how to package you own app: https://gitlab.com/mayan-edms

The documentation chapter on the matter: http://docs.mayan-edms.com/en/latest/topics/development.html

I'm sorry, I still don't get it: Does it mean that the newer version doesn't OCR PDF documents anymore out of the box? Or does it mean that basic OCR is there as it has always been, and to get the more advanced zone OCR one would have to buy the plugin?

The OCR app will have to be removed before version 3.0. The improved OCR app (zones & barcodes) will be available as a separate app. The current app can be extracted and packaged as Jesaja suggests. As a compromise the OCR was split into two in version 2.7, and while there will be no OCR by default, text from PDF files will still be available using parsing via the new `document_parsing` app.
